Skijor Skowhegan is one of the most thrilling competitions in New England. A horse and rider will pull an alpine skier or snowboarder at speeds up to 30 MPH down a 1,000-foot course of jumps and gates.
The race will be held on February 24, 2024, at the Skowhegan State Fairgrounds (33 Constitution Ave).
*YOU MUST REGISTER AS A HORSE RIDER/SKIER TEAM*Many local businesses want to sponsor teams, if you would like to volunteer to be a sponsored team and get 50% of your registration back on race day, register as usual and check the 'yes' option in the additional questions. We can not guarantee a sponsorship and will assign sponsors to teams on a first-come, first-serve basis. Your commitment as a sponsored team is:- The horse rider will wear a paper bib with the sponsor's logo pinned on their back for the entirety of the race.
- The team agrees to be announced as a sponsored team by XYZ company during their runs.
Sign-up rules:
- A horse can not run on more than ONE team (a maximum of two runs).
- The same team (horse, rider, skier) may only compete in ONE division.
- Riders and skiers can compete on up to TWO teams.
- A rider can not use the same horse on both teams (see rule one).
- Neither rider nor skier can compete in more than one division (see rule two).
- Horse riders must come with their own horse. Skijor Skowhegan does not provide horses.
- All competitors will have the option to inspect the course and a warm-up area will be provided for horses.
Timing and ranking:
Skijor Skowhegan will be using chip timing to ensure the greatest accuracy. The winning time is based on the best time of two runs. Age groups and division heats will be run consecutively.
Divisions:- Pro—considered to be the highest-skilled competitor with the fastest horses. A team consists of a horse, rider, and skier/snowboarder. The skier/snowboarder is expected to use the jumps included in the course.
- Novice—considered to be beginner-level competitors riding horses that may not have speed enough to be competitive in the pro division. Novice skiers/snowboarders are not expected to hit jumps.
- Snowboarding division — if we get at least 5 snowboarders, we’ll have a division!
Competitors will race in two age groups: junior (10-17 yo) and adult (18+ yo). Race officials will assign competitors to their age group based on the skier’s age. There must be three or more junior competitors to create a junior division.Other rules and regulations:- Horses from out-of-state must provide a 1-year Coggins test and health certificate, per state regulations. Horses traveling in-state are required to provide a 3-year Coggins test.
- Due to the nature of the event, Skijor Skowhegan’s insurance requires horse riders to be a minimum of 14 yo and skiers/snowboarders a minimum of 10 yo.
