  • Ready to try a dynamic water sport?  Skowhegan Outdoors Introduction to Whitewater Kayaking Camp is perfect for students grades 8 through 12, who are looking to explore the sport of whitewater kayaking. Previous whitewater kayaking experience IS NOT required. All participants must know how to swim.

    Our camp promises an exhilarating experience packed with safety, skills, and of course thrills!

    We are pleased to offer this camp free of charge due to the generous support of Main Street Skowhegan, Katahdin Learning Project and the Maine Department of Education - Maine Outdoor Learning Initiative. Space is limited, so sign up today.

    SKOWHEGAN OUTDOORS INTRODUCTION TO WHITEWATER KAYAKING CAMP

    Develop skills to confidently paddle Class III whitewater and surf river waves in a kayak. You'll start on the flat water of the Kennebec River in Skowhegan and build up to running the lower Kennebec in The Forks.


    CAMPERS SHOULD EXPECT:

    • Friendly, positive, and challenge-by-choice instruction from the Skowhegan Outdoors staff.
    • To be properly briefed on safety and communication.
    • To learn paddling techniques.
    • To learn how to maneuver in moving water.
    • To learn river reading concepts.
    • Lunch is included, daily.
    • Kayaks, paddles and PFDs (personal flotation devices) will be provided.
    • Transportation from Skowhegan Outdoors Basecamp to various put ins, is provided each day.
    • Camp ends with a run down the Lower Kennebec River in The Forks.


    EXPECTATIONS OF CAMPERS:

    • Open mind and positive attitude.
    • All participants must know how to swim.
    • Prior whitewater experience is not required.
    • Start the day with a hearty breakfast before arriving at camp, lunch is provided, but campers will need to begin each day fueled up and hydrated.
    • Bring an extra towel, and wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting wet; sunscreen or SPF clothings is recommended.
    • Bring extra water, it gets hot fast!
